Well, the cat’s out of the bag. I have another gig, and I’m so very excited about it. I’m joining Fearless SC (shoutout to German football) as the NWSL journalist. They’ve insisted that I’m a good fit, and they’re even letting me write how I want. I am honored that they’re taking a chance on me, because this project is truly one I’m proud to join. I cannot wait to talk about all things NWSL and women’s soccer with you all.
To get it started, I’m going to do the basic girl thing and give you a primer on the things you should know about the NWSL. This space is for people at all parts of their women’s soccer fandom. Whether you’ve just begun, or you’ve been in it since the days of questionable streaming on go90. Walk with me as we jump into the beautiful game, together.

With every team playing 13 of their 26 games, and having played every opponent once, Kansas City has separated themselves from the pack so far this season. While every
team in the league has two losses, Kansas City hasn’t lost since their 1-0 defeat away to Seattle, and they’re scoring goals in bunches. They have the most productive attack that includes the reigning MVP and Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga, and they added one of the best goal keepers in the world by signing Brazil’s #1 keeper Lorena. Every team will get another chance against the Current. We’ll see if other teams made improvements that can help them defeat the Midwest juggernaut.
July 01, 2025 marked the first day of free agency and the open transfer window for the summer in the NWSL. We’ve already had a few major international signings announced, including Iceland international Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir to Angel City (Los Angeles), Danish international Josefine Hasbo to Gotham FC (New Jersey/New York), and Italian Sofia Cantore to the Washington (DC) Spirit, while Boston Legacy FC, one of two expansion teams joining the league next season, signed their first player Annie Karich to the team.
My biggest suggestion is, buckle up. There is still a month to go in the window, and some big name free agency looking to be courted for the 2026 season and beyond. Be sure to stay here as we track player movement and the basics of doing business in a growing NWSL.

The NWSL is in the midst of a youth movement. While veterans still roam the pitches and are in contention for many end-of-season awards, players under the age of twenty-five are thriving as they start their professional careers younger. Whether it’s 17-year-old Trinity Armstrong starting as a center back for surprising San Diego Wave, or teenager Claire Hutton roaming the midfield for the Current, or even rookie Riley Tiernan of Angel City keeping pace in the Golden Boot Race, young players on every NWSL team are finding their footing and thriving on all three lines.
There is legitimate concern for young players as the league, and teams navigate what it means to keep players and minors safe and healthy in a league that’s just learning to protect adults, but the kids are alright, and they can play with the vets and entertain the masses just fine.
Gisele Thompson sends in a dime and Riley Tiernan rises up to meet it 🚀
It’s her 7th goal of the season, tying her in 2nd for most rookie goals ever!

Marta Vieira da Silva is regarded by many as the greatest player in women’s football. She said last year on her way to her first NWSL Title and NWSL Shield, that she thinks the NWSL is the best league in the world. She’s certainly encouraged many of the young Brazilians players to join the league, and she plays alongside one of the best young players in the world in Barbra Banda. It’s hard to measure leagues against one another for various reasons, but the NWSL can make a solid argument for boasting
some of the best women’s football talent on Earth.
In addition to the incoming players mentioned earlier in this article, the NWSL’s reigning MVP is from Malawi, the current MVP race includes a players from Brazil, France, the United States, and Zambia in addition to Malawi. We have coaches from nations as varied as Norway, Portugal, and North Macedonia. Despite everything swirling around the NWSL, the league itself is more international, technical, and diverse than ever, and that is a great thing for football lovers all over.
Players face many tactical styles, learn how to control the tempo of the game, and “get their weight” up so that they’re fighting fit and better developed players for both club and country. Like any league, the NWSL is far from perfect, but the word is out that playing here will make you better. More players, domestic and international, seem eager to come here and test this theory, and we’re all more educated soccer fans for it.
In addition to being one of the best leagues in the world, the NWSL is also known for that great American sports concept, parity. Though the 2024 season proved to be an outlier to recent seasons, the “any given Sunday” mindset runs strongly through the league each weekend. This makes for entertaining weekends, stunning goals, and chaotic night matches that have led to the label “NWSL After Dark.” The unknown of each weekend is what keeps newcomers and diehards alike coming back repeatedly to take in the action. Whether you came to league via the likes of Trinity Rodman or Rose Lavelle, or you want to cheer on the hometown team, there’s always a match worth
watching each week.
The NWSL can truly boast that there’s no league quite like it. And while I think that this league isn’t for everyone, I have a feeling, dear reader, that it might be for you.
Temwa Chawinga can change a game in the blink of an eye 👀
